Higher Education Summit Scheduled for November
The New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force will address the chronic problems facing Hispanics and higher education. The factors negatively impacting Hispanic academic achievement and educational attainment have reached a critical mass with dire consequences. In fact, White House economists have concluded that, "Unless we see a dramatic increase in the educational attainment - particularly college completion - we’re going to see a dramatic negative impact on the economy, especially in states with large Hispanic populations. Monday,
May 1, 2006 will see thousands of businesses closed, millions
of workers absent from work, tens of thousands of students not attending
classes and dozens of elected officials not participate in official
duties as a show of support for immigrants and fair immigration
policies. All of the 16 Hispanic members of the New York State Assembly
and Senate will walk out of their Legislative Sessions begining
at 2:00pm in a show of solidarity with immigrants all across the
nation. A press conference will folllow immediately in the State
Capitol.
